Constantine Nicholas is an Australian visual artist. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Art (visual) from Australian National University and a Graduate Diploma of Professional Art studies, University of NSW. He has held over 30 solo exhibitions and 50 group exhibitions. His works have been exhibited nationally and internationally and can be found in many notable art collections – including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Australian National University, Kerry Stokes Collection and BHP Billiton. Many of his works have been selected for major art prizes including the Moet & Chandon Prize touring exhibition and the Sulman Art Prize. His awards include the Australia Council’s, New York SoHo studio residency and the Gunnery Studio in Sydney. His works are held by collectors, globally.
Nicholas’s practice is driven by recurring themes of light, darkness, abstraction, and identity. Working across painting, drawing, installation, and digital media, he is drawn to processes that resist conscious control — methods that allow mark-making to happen without the artist’s direct intervention. His materials are often unconventional: sandpaper, pigment, furniture remnants, melamine — objects repurposed as tools and subjects simultaneously.
His current body of work, begun in 2024, emerged from a period of profound personal challenge following a rare bone marrow diagnosis. The resulting series, Random Scrubs — Days of Darkness, brought together abstract works on sandpaper and dismantled garden furniture in an installation at SLOT Window Gallery, Sydney. The work explores the connection between drawn image and source material, and abstractly references the physical experience of illness — lightness and darkness made visible.
Since 2021, Nicholas has also been active in the digital art space, minting and curating work on the Solana blockchain under the handle @artcons9. He curates collections exploring abstraction and photomedia, and writes critically about art and artists. This expanded practice — spanning the physical studio and the decentralised web — reflects his longstanding interest in new audiences for art beyond the traditional gallery circuit.
Major commissions include the millennium mural for Kerry Stokes’ office in Sydney, 2000 and Suntec City Towers 3 & 4, Singapore. The artist was born in Perth, Western Australia and lives in Sydney.
